The Baltimore Youth Kinetic Energy Collective (BYKE) is a program designed to develop personal and professional skills in young people through learning bicycle mechanics, safe ridership, community values, and respect in Baltimore City's marginalized neighborhoods. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, 12-17 year olds from under-resourced areas of Baltimore fix their own bicycles, or work to earn a used bicycle from the shop with guidance from expert mechanics. We focus on employability and provide mechanics demonstrations and classes for youth to gain marketable skills. At the end of every open-shop, BYKE members facilitate meetings to review goals and accomplishments and express appreciation and concerns. We use tools to create community norms grounded in restorative justice. Members also plan group rides, which involve exploring new places in the city and having fun team bonding experiences.
