Clean Slate America
For a decade, Clean Slate America has expunged records for citizens who are Ready, Willing but Unable to Work due to a criminal background check. Through collaboration, interns from area educational institutions gain practical experience, as expungement clerks, while completing required field study hours. Monthly D-I-Y workshops have allowed citizens, case managers and program administrators to learn the nuts and bolts of the expungement process while gaining hands on experience. Via community outreach, advocacy, public speaking engagements, testimony and mobilization of the impacted community Clean Slate America has helped change legislation in Maryland. We recognize the economic impact unemployment caused by a criminal record has on the individual with the record but also on their children, the people supporting them and those waiting to be supported. Child poverty and hunger along with urban blight and the resultant decreased tax base are all attributable to effect criminal background checks have on unemployment. Nearly, ten years ago Clean Slate America coined the phrase 'Perpetual Punishment' when a client said, "My life changed for the better more 13 years ago and it (my record) is still held against me. I am now a responsible adult with children to raise and bills to pay. Every time I apply for a good paying job I am knocked down and kicked aside." That's why Clean Slate America exists, to open the door to the 2nd Chance people ask for and need.
